Social Media is a tool, content marketing is the KING!

It is uncontested that social media has become one of the popular tools used by every marketer to reach its target markets. Wide range of coverage is one of the advantages of using social media. Furthermore, in comparing to traditional advertising such as TV ads and Billboard, social media is obviously way much cheaper and it only makes social media become more valuable on the marketer's mind.  But, one thing that every marketer must bear in their mind, social media is only a tool to deliver your messages or your products to your target markets and the most important of all is actually the content of the marketing itself.

According to Bob Geller  content marketing is a practice that involves the development or sharing high quality content of marketing in order to engage with current or potential customers. From its definition, it can be seen clearly that delivering the high quality content is a must for every marketer in order to successfully applied social media as their marketing tools, because without a great content,  it is impossible to build successful social media presence.

So, what happens if we can incorporate social media and a great content of marketing? I would say that it is going to be a perfect combination of promoting your brand or products. Therefore, it can be said that social media and content marketing are complements and support each other.

What do you guys think? Would you say that social media is too powerful nowadays so that a great content marketing is no longer needed?

Cheers,
Ivan

  1. Hi Ivan, good point of view there.

Personally, i agree that relevant content is very important to build successful viral presence. However i also think that, first of all you need to have an interesting 'front page' in their social media tools. Some consumers does judge the book by it's cover, if the front page is not interesting enough, they wont come.

Thus i think that the social media 'front page' is the thing that makes the consumer come and relevant content is what makes them stay. I agree that the combination of these two will make a successful social media presence.

  2. Hi Ian. Spot on!

Your comment regarding the front page of the social media is absolutely valid. Thus, creativity plays an important role here. With creativity, marketers are able to constantly innovate their social media site and eventually will attract the co called "consumers who judge the book by its cover".

    Cheers,
    Ivan

  3. Great post Muhammad, I agree SM as a media channel offers some great advantages but the same rules apply as with all media channels, you need smart/effective/creative/relevant content in order for it to cut through.

  5. I have to ask - to what extent is SM about "content", rather than "conversations"? Should it be the job of a SM marketers to creat content, or just a platform for customer dialogue?

  6. Hi Wags.

    Thanks for the comment.

In my opinion, SM is not just a platform for customer dialogue. SM also can be utilized by the marketers to promote their products to the consumers, or in other words, the commercialization of Social Media and content plays an important role here.

For example, a company tries to sell its clothing products by using SM (FB or Twitter) as a medium to upload the pictures of its products. Having a fancy picture I suppose will help the company to attract more viewers rather than having a simple picture uploaded.

Picture or photo is what i meant by the content and having a great content will help SM promotion works at its best.

Hope it is clear and correct me if I'm wrong.

    Cheers,
    Ivan

  7. Hi Ivan,

You definitely aren't wrong - and there are some good cases of companies using SM to post content and sell products. Social commerce is somewhat new, and a developing area.

I think the key to success here is for brands to also allow customer dialogue on their sites. Ratings and reviews might be part of the solution, ensuring customers have a say, and they can share and learn from each other on the site.

Well done - keep up the good work! :)
